Why is my quilt block the wrong size?

Five checks explain a quilt block that looks too small or too large. Match the symptom you can observe, run that test, then follow its guide. The sequence below is a route map, not a ranking of which cause is more likely.

The five causes

  1. The quarter inch seam allowance

    Every block runs a little small, and the more seams it has, the smaller it comes out.

  2. Finished vs unfinished block size

    The block measures exactly ½″ over the pattern's stated size — that is the unfinished size, and nothing is wrong.

  3. Printing quilt patterns at 100%

    Everything cut from a printed template is off by the same small factor — the printer scaled the page.

  4. How to square up a quilt block

    Individual units drifted as you sewed, and the differences added up instead of being trimmed back.

  5. Quilt block sizes

    You cut and sewed carefully and the block is still off — the size itself may not divide onto the ruler.


The size that cannot be cut

Some sizes cannot be cut accurately at all, however careful you are. A 5-patch block at 12″ would need each unit to finish at 2.4″ — and 2.4″ is not a mark on any ruler, so every cut is a guess before the first seam goes in. The ruler below shows exactly where that lands.

Each internal seam eats the error twice, once from each of the two pieces it joins, so a row of n units loses twice the error for every one of its n minus 1 seams. That is why a more finely pieced grid drifts further even though every seam is off by the same tiny amount, and why the shortfall does not depend on the block's finished size at all.

Common questions

Why is my block too small?

A deep seam allowance is one testable cause: a seam even a needle's width deeper than a true quarter inch takes fabric out of every unit, and the loss grows with every seam in the row. The quarter inch seam test compares your sewn row with the derived target.

Why is my block too big?

Check what you are measuring against: an unjoined block should measure ½″ OVER its finished size, and reading the finished size off the pattern makes a correct block look too big — finished vs unfinished explains the difference. If it is genuinely over, your seams are running scant.

Can I fix a block that's already sewn?

Sometimes. A block slightly over size trims down — square it up to its unfinished size. A block under size cannot be stretched: re-sew the deepest seams if you can find them, or let sashing between blocks absorb the difference. What never works is pulling it to fit — the quilt remembers.
